Measuring your success
“I have learned that success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has had to overcome while trying to succeed.”
-Booker T. Washington
Let’s admit it. We live in a materialistic world where success always equates to money. In fact, to be considered successful, one must be incredibly wealthy and always surrounded by luxurious things. Yes, money is essential but it is not everything. When measuring success, wealth should only be a part of it.
By definition, success is the accomplishment of an aim or purpose. Notice that there’s no mention of money or wealth. It means that money is just one of the goals of being successful and not the standard to measuring it. There are many ways of gauging one’s success that doesn’t involve monetary wealth. Just do a quick search on the internet and you will discover a lot of people who achieved awesome things that don’t have huge bank accounts. The question is if those people are successful, why are they not featured prominently on social media or constantly mentioned in blogs or articles? For one thing, people, in general, are more attracted to images of monetary success. Don’t you think it’s time to change that? Let’s start by talking about the different ways we can measure success besides money.
Having A Sense Of Joy
What good is having a huge bank account if you dread going to work every morning? Even worst, feeling empty despite having all the money you could ever spend. Yes, with money you can buy all the nice things you could ever want but those moments of joy are fleeting. If you truly love what you do, you’ll wake up every morning with a sense of excitement and joy about what the day will bring you. It’s an awesome feeling. If you are already living this type of life, give yourself a pat on the back. You’ve succeeded.
Nothing Keeps You Down
Life has a way of testing us. It throws us challenges that can really pummel us down to our lowest point. However, if you keep finding the courage to get back up and try again, then you can call yourself a success. There are countless people who just give up. You are one of the few who just keeps going. Remember, it’s not really failing when you keep on trying.
